Week of April 19th Round-Up

Ohio Business Leaders Urge State Legislators to Invest in Child Care

Last week, we shared with you the growing chorus of business leaders, child care and early childhood professionals, health care providers, parents, local elected officials, and more who are calling on Ohio legislators to make child care accessible to more working families.

Our momentum continues to grow: Check out this opinion piece by Robert O'Neill, President of the Southgate Corporation in Newark, on why he supports investment in quality child care. Then watch our new video featuring Lori Kaiser, founder and CEO of Kaiser Consulting in Powell, on why quality child care is so important to her business and employees.

Are you a small business owner or local business leader who wants to support our child care advocacy efforts? Contact Chelsea Kiene with the Groundwork Ohio team at ckiene@groundworkohio.org.

Join us TODAY at 10:00 AM for Groundwork Ohio's Laying the Groundwork Summit: in the Ohio Senate. We are thrilled to welcome our keynote speaker Rhian Evans Allvin, CEO for National Association for the Education of Young Children, along with our legislative panel:

  • Senator Matt Dolan, Chair of Finance Committee

  • Senator Jay Hottinger, President Pro Tempore

  • Senator Vernon Sykes, Finance Committee Ranking Minority Member

  • Senator Kenny Yuko, Minority Leader

This virtual summit is an opportunity to hear the latest on Ohio's biennial budget, how the budget can support quality early childhood experiences for Ohio's youngest kids, and how you can engage in advocacy throughout the budget process. This event offers 1.5 hours of Ohio Approved Credit for participants who provide their OPIN number during registration and stay for the entire event.

This week, members of the Ohio House passed their version of the state biennial budget. Unfortunately, the House budget did not include any additional investment to expand upon the governor's budget proposal for critical programs like Publicly Funded Child Care or Ohio's Help Me Grow.

As the state budget moves to the Ohio Senate, we need your help to urge legislators to prioritize quality early childhood experiences in the budget.

Your voice in this state budget process matters. Sign up today to participate in next week's virtual advocacy challenge from April 26–April 30. We'll provide all the tips and tools you need to elevate your voice at the Statehouse. Each advocacy action will take only a few minutes of your time – and you may even win a prize!

Webinar: Supporting Moms and Babies in the Upcoming Biennium

Throughout the state budget process, Groundwork Ohio has been working hard to elevate the needs of Ohio's infants, toddlers, and their families. This includes calling on state legislators to support infant and maternal health in the state budget so that every mom and baby can reach their full potential.

We're pleased to share that the Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) is inviting stakeholders to attend a webinar on Tuesday, April 27 at 10:00 AM on the Department's initiatives for supporting moms and babies in the upcoming biennium.

On the webinar, representatives from ODM and Governor Mike DeWine’s Children’s Initiative will provide an overview of Medicaid’s current and upcoming work on elements of the Maternal and Infant Support Program (MISP). Click here to register for the webinar.
